Coolant troubles

Hi

Series 3, 2.25 petrol. Temp gauge not working so connected wire straight to earth and gauge went straight to the top so I've replaced the sender.

Now, 2 issues:
1 - I drained the coolant from the radiator only and not from the block drain. When I refilled (slowly) using the coolant I'd removed (which was still nice and clean and fresh antifreeze), I couldn't fit it all back in. What's going on???

2 - temp gauge reads even colder than before - it's off the bottom of the scale. Brand new sender.

Help???

Bil

OK I've resolved the sender problem, it was the wrong part!!

Any ideas on the refilling of the system and possible airlocks gratefully received.

Let it warm at idle whitout the radiator cap and wait for the termostat opening, and after refill whith coolant.

This is getting worse!!!

Just drained it again and flushed through with clean water and let it all drain. Could only get 8 litres and I got about 10 out! Ran engine with rad cap off and it soon started to rise up and overflow. Infra red temp reader on the thermostat housing read about 65 C. All hoses were hot and if I increased the revs the coolant went down in the rad but then came up again very frothy and overflowed again when I lowered the revs. I couldn't seem to get it hot enough to open the thermostat.

Stumped now!

Hello

I had similar issues when I reassembled my diesel after refurb, your thermostat might be stuck, I went through three units before I had a functional system. If you change it make sure to stay away from the britparts ones.....

Thanks, I'm seriously suspecting the thermostat too.

Don't forget to drill a 3mm hole in the thermostat to let the water flow pass trough when it is close.

Why would I want to do that?

To let the air bubles goes out when it's close before the engine warm and the thermostat start to open. The hole must be one the edge of the thermostat. Sometimes some thermostats are sale whith the ole predrilled.
